The Porter Ranch Neighborhood Council partnered with Councilmember Mitchell Englander on the installation of exercise equipment for adults at Holleigh Bernson Park. Walkers can take advantage of the new equipment to complete nine different cardio and strengthening exercises working arms, abs and legs. The ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the equipment installation was on Friday, April 11. The Councilmember and community leaders were on hand to celebrate. Board members Sue Hammarlund and Becky Leveque spoke about how wonderful it was to have exercise equipment for adults to use at the park, making it a park for everyone.
The assistant general manager of Recreation and Parks Planning, Construction and Maintenance, Ramon Barajas, said that the city recently identified the biggest need wasfor fitness equipment and walking paths. As recently as 2009, there were only three exercise equipment areas in the whole city. Now there are 52, but Holleigh Bernson is the first park in Council District 12 to have fitness equipment installed. The city hopes to expand to 100 fitness areas over the next several years.
The PRNC first worked with the Councilman’s office in 2007 to install the shade covering over the playground at Holleigh Bernson Park. After that successful project, Board Member Sue Hammarlund, together with Becky Leveque and other PRNC members proposed exercise equipment in the park for adults in 2009.
The PRNC was prepared to fund part of the project, but the Councilmember’s office found that it could be funded with surplus funds from another project completed with Proposition A money. Englander’s staff worked with Recreation and Parks and PRNC members to determine what equipment would work within the budget. The total cost was just over $30,000. The PRNC is proud to collaborate with Councilmember Englander in his Year of Healthy Living and making this key Porter Ranch park available for people of all ages and abilities.
